Seung Hong (Pyoyo)
The Warden’s Journal
Seung Hong (Pyoyo)는 The Warden’s Journal의 창작자이자 감독이다.
The Warden’s Journal
Seung Hong (Pyoyo)
Creator & Director of The Warden’s Journal
Seung Hong (Pyoyo) is the creator and director of The Warden’s Journal. A graphic designer and illustrator, he has long made his own stories and images. He studied animation with Kataneh Vahdani and illustration with Mercedes McDonald.
His production process starts with references. Character, environment, and color design, along with composition and placement, come before translating a scene into motion through storyboards and keyframes. In The Warden’s Journal, he wants to convey the protagonist’s desperation, the chemistry between characters, and psychological horror.
Director’s Interview
Story, characters, and making the movement work
On October 15, 2026, Seung Hong (Pyoyo) spoke about the story and his production process. The conversation has been edited for clarity and organization. The separate spoiler section discusses story developments and action that is still planned.
The creator and the process
How long have you been making stories and images?
I’ve been making my own stories and images for a long time. I’m a graphic designer and illustrator. I studied animation with Kataneh Vahdani and illustration with Mercedes McDonald.
Which parts of that training do you use most in directing?
Storyboarding, creating keyframes, and animating those keyframes.
What comes first when you build a scene?
References. That includes character design, environment design, color design, all of it. I don’t move forward without references.
The references establish the world’s design, composition, positions, and backgrounds. Once all of that is decided, I translate it into video.
How much of the AI-assisted production do you direct yourself?
I direct all of it. I create the keyframes to set the direction. But the result doesn’t always come out the way I want.
Characters and horror
What feeling did you most want to convey in The Warden’s Journal?
The protagonist’s desperation. He’s going through extraordinary events.
What drives Dr. Hong’s desperation, and how does he respond to what he experiences?
His desperation is rooted in his research. He analyzes everything, so his approach is different. He accepts what he’s experiencing and keeps analyzing it.
Hong is the protagonist, but the supporting characters have major roles.
Who are the most important supporting characters?
Kim, Mallory, and Mrs. Waite.
What does Kim bring to Hong’s work?
Kim is smart, and she keeps giving Hong hints. She looks at methods logically. When Dr. Hong gets caught up in analysis, Kim is the one who reminds him of the reality of the situation.
What matters to you about the dynamic between Hong and Kim?
The chemistry between the characters. And honestly, it wouldn’t make sense for Dr. Hong not to have an assistant.
How does the bond between them come through?
Hong and Kim are both Korean, and there’s jeong between them, a feeling of attachment. They’re always together.
Why did you choose cosmic horror?
I wanted to show psychological horror too. I didn’t want it to be only a creature feature. I wanted something more psychological.
Motion and production choices
What is hardest to realize when turning a designed scene into motion?
Action animation, especially exaggerated motion. In my experience making it with AI, the movement can come out too restrained, too dignified. Getting the exaggeration I want is the hardest part.
How do you decide whether to remake something or let it pass?
If something needs to be remade, I remake it. But generation costs credits, so I sometimes let an issue pass if it’s tolerable. The quality control isn’t perfect.
It depends on how important the action is. If an important action doesn’t work the way it needs to, I always remake it.
What stays with the audience
What do you want viewers to remember long after watching?
The story as a whole, really. And the characters.
Spoilers · Story developments and planned action
The section below reveals the fictional world and major story developments. It also discusses plans for a scene that has not yet been made.
Where does the psychological horror come through most clearly?
Where does the psychological horror come through most clearly?
In the story when the protagonist goes into space. In that world, humanity is very small. An intergalactic society already exists. The technological gulf is like humans looking at ants.
Why does Hong first obtain the Necronomicon?
Why does Hong first obtain the Necronomicon?
For research. He obtains the Necronomicon to study it as a researcher. The book he obtains is Holt’s stolen Necronomicon.
Why does Hong keep researching after that?
Why does Hong keep researching after that?
The reason he keeps researching is that he is the keeper of the key. He performs a ritual with the Necronomicon in front of a mirror and steps onto a path he can’t turn back from.
Which planned scene will test whether you can achieve the action you want?
Which planned scene will test whether you can achieve the action you want?
I think it will come down to the chase between Dagon and Hong’s team. That scene will show whether I can make the movement I want.
The plan is for one character to jump to another car and continue the action there. That will be the key action moment.
